What Is Rabi’ al-Awwal?
Third Month
The third month of the Hijri calendar, following Muharram and Safar.
Meaning of the Name
“Rabi’ al-Awwal” means “the first spring” — named for the season in which it originally fell within the pre-Islamic Arabian calendar, before the lunar calendar decoupled month names from fixed seasons.
Month of the Prophet ﷺ
Widely regarded as the month of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ birth, the completion of the Hijrah to Madinah, and — years later — his passing.
A Month Like Any Other
Rabi’ al-Awwal is not one of the four sacred months, but its significance comes from what occurred within it — not from any inherent power of the month itself.

“Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him.”
Sahih Muslim 384 — narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA)“The miserly one is he in whose presence I am mentioned, yet he does not send blessings upon me.”
Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3546 — graded authentic; narrated by Ali (RA)Scholarly Understanding
Sending Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is a command from Allah Himself in the Qur’an (33:56), directed at every believer, in every month of the year.
Scholars note that remembering the Prophet ﷺ with love and gratitude — through Salawat, seerah study, and following his example — is agreed upon across the breadth of Islamic scholarship, even where views differ on specific customs.
Studying the seerah is not simply history; it is meant to shape character, as the Prophet ﷺ himself is described in the Qur’an as “an excellent pattern” (33:21) for those who hope in Allah and the Last Day.
Loving the Prophet ﷺ is described as a condition of complete faith — not a sentiment reserved for a particular season, but a standing of the heart maintained year-round.
Unity in Love for the Prophet ﷺ
What is agreed upon across the Muslim community, alongside matters where sincere scholarly practice differs — presented neutrally, without favouring one view over another.

- Sending abundant Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ
- Studying and teaching his seerah
- Striving to embody his character and Sunnah
- Loving him above all else besides Allah

- The specific customs used to mark his birth
- The exact calendar date of his birth (the 12th is most widely cited; some scholars differ)
- Whether commemorating his birth as an annual observance is encouraged or discouraged
Lessons We Can Learn From Rabi’ al-Awwal
Send Abundant Salawat
Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ; believers are commanded to do the same.

Qur’an 33:56Study the Seerah

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern…”
Qur’an 33:21Follow His Character
His conduct is described directly by Allah as the standard of moral excellence.
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
Qur’an 68:4Recognize His Mercy
His mission was sent as a mercy extended to every creation, not to one people alone.
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
Qur’an 21:107Strengthen Love for Him
Complete faith is tied to placing love for the Prophet ﷺ above worldly attachments.
“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all of mankind.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 15Reflect on Legacy
His passing, in this same month years later, is a reminder that his teachings — not his physical presence — carry his legacy forward.
“Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him…”
Qur’an 3:144Qur’anic Reminder
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ

Teach Your Family
-
1
Introduce his story simply: begin with the Year of the Elephant and his birth in Makkah, a memorable and gentle entry point for young children.
-
2
Teach the meaning of Salawat early, so that saying “peace be upon him” becomes second nature and rooted in real understanding, not rote habit.
-
3
Use the seerah as character education — his honesty, kindness, and patience offer concrete examples children can relate to in daily life.
-
4
If your family observes Mawlid customs, explain them alongside the agreed foundations — love, Salawat, and following his example — so children understand both the practice and its purpose.
-
5
Model consistent love and mention of the Prophet ﷺ year-round, not only in Rabi’ al-Awwal, so children see that this is a standing of the heart rather than a seasonal observance.
