What Is Rabi’ al-Awwal?

The third month of the Hijri calendar, following Muharram and Safar.
Meaning of the Name
“Rabi’ al-Awwal” means “the first spring” — named for the season in which it originally fell within the pre-Islamic Arabian calendar, before the lunar calendar decoupled month names from fixed seasons.

Widely regarded as the month of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ birth, the completion of the Hijrah to Madinah, and — years later — his passing.

Sending Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is a command from Allah Himself in the Qur’an (33:56), directed at every believer, in every month of the year.
Scholars note that remembering the Prophet ﷺ with love and gratitude — through Salawat, seerah study, and following his example — is agreed upon across the breadth of Islamic scholarship, even where views differ on specific customs.
Studying the seerah is not simply history; it is meant to shape character, as the Prophet ﷺ himself is described in the Qur’an as “an excellent pattern” (33:21) for those who hope in Allah and the Last Day.
Loving the Prophet ﷺ is described as a condition of complete faith — not a sentiment reserved for a particular season, but a standing of the heart maintained year-round.

Year of the Elephant — Birth of the Prophet ﷺ
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah, in the year traditionally associated with Abraha’s failed expedition against the Ka’bah.
Arrival at Quba
Having departed Makkah in Safar, the Prophet ﷺ arrived at Quba, on the outskirts of Madinah, early in Rabi’ al-Awwal, where he laid the foundation of Masjid Quba — the first mosque built in Islam.
The First Friday Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ led the first Jumu’ah prayer in Islam at the settlement of Banu Salim ibn Awf, while journeying from Quba toward Madinah.
Arrival in Madinah
The Prophet ﷺ entered Madinah to a joyous welcome, marking the formal beginning of the Madinan period and the establishment of the first organised Muslim community.
Passing of the Prophet ﷺ
After an illness that began in Safar, the Prophet ﷺ passed away in Madinah on 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal, 11 AH, having led the community in prayer until shortly before his passing.
